Level 3

Intermediate French

You should be confident with basic tenses (present, past (perfect), immediate future).

Objectives

  • To improve your confidence in conversational French.
  • To consolidate sentence structure and grammar, including revisions of the present, past, and future tenses.
  • To enrich your vocabulary, learn some idioms, and more useful colloquial expressions.

This is a flexible outline and will be adjusted to meet your needs and interests.

  • Introducing yourself and identifying others. Exchanging personal details.
  • Talking about activities in the past. Replying to invitations and formal letters/emails.
  • Giving details of an area you are familiar with. Discussing location of flats and houses.
  • Being eco-friendly at home.
  • Ordering meals, stating preferences. Discussing different types of food and drinks.
  • At the supermarket, the post office and the bank.

Grammatical structures covered

Intermediate Level 1

  • Revision of present tense, regular and common irregular verbs.
  • Past tense (perfect) with avoir and être.
  • Possessive pronouns.

Intermediate Level 2

  • Imperfect tense.
  • Pluperfect.
  • Direct and indirect speech.

Intermediate Level 3

  • Conditional tense.
  • Si clauses (present + future, imperfect + conditional).
  • Relative pronouns: qui, que, dont, où.

Higher Intermediate

  • Subjunctive — introduction and common triggers.
  • Reported speech in past tenses.
  • More complex relative clauses.
